Snake Avoidance Training

Snake avoidance training is designed to help your dog recognise and avoid snakes, reducing the risk of dangerous encounters at home or when out and about.

Snake avoidance training is delivered through private, one-on-one sessions, tailored specifically to your dog and your environment.

• Each session runs for 1 hour
• Training is done in your own environment(I come to you)
• I recommend a minimum of three sessions, however the exact number will depend on:
• Your dog’s confidence and learning pace
• Their previous training experience
• The set-up required for your property and lifestyle

We do NOT use live snakes.

Instead, we use snake scent tubes, which are widely used in professional scent detection work. These tubes contain real snake scent and allow us to safely teach dogs what to do when they encounter it.

Your dog is trained to:

• Recognise the smell of snakes
• Learn to avoid the scent
• Respond appropriately without panic or fear

As training progresses, we also introduce movement using a realistic fake snake, helping your dog generalise their learning beyond scent alone.

Training is customised to suit where your dog is most likely to encounter snakes, including:

• At home, when they are unsupervised
• On walks or outings
• Open environments such as beaches, bushland, or parks
• For example, areas like Fairy Meadow Dog Beach, where Red Belly Black Snakes may be present

Snakes do not all smell the same.

For example, a Brown Snake has a different scent to a Red Belly Black Snake.

This is why scent training is so important and why multiple scent tubes may be recommended.

• Session price: Varies depending on your location
• Snake scent tubes: $15 per tube

You keep the scent tube, allowing to practice in between sessions.

• Snake avoidance training is suitable for dogs of all ages and is especially recommended for:
  • Dogs living near bushland or waterways
  • Dogs that spend time off-lead
  • Curious or prey-driven dogs
